CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Xander walked down the steps of Nikolay Mikhailov’s private jet and stopped when his feet hit the tarmac in Seattle.

The tall, square-jawed man with strong brows and short dark brown hair followed. He lowered a pair of dark glasses, covering the pair of deadly and sharp crystal blue eyes.

How anyone could smirk and scowl at the same time, he had no idea. But Nikolay had the art perfected.

Frankly, it was unnerving.

Meeting the mob boss in person had been a stark reminder to Xander exactly who he was in business with. A powerful and dangerous individual with more money than God, it seemed.

He’d done further researching knowing the Russian was heading to the United States and learned he was the fifth richest person in the world. Apparently. Either way, he had a shit ton more than Xander had.

Which meant power.

A language Xander spoke.

And respected.

And feared.

His security team stood around him—which seemed to amuse Mikhailov—waiting to escort him to the black SUV parked alongside the enormous black Russian jet.

Or maybe the guy just had resting-smart-ass face.

He’d seen enough of it today.

After enduring a long lunch with him and five of his family members—family my ass, or maybe they were, but Xander wasn’t that familiar with the whole Russian gangster family tree—Nikolay had insisted he fly them to Las Vegas.

He’d been unable to hide his shock.

Very few people knew about the second location they had built in the desert city.

“Are we going gambling?” he had asked, feigning ignorance.

“Don’t fuck with me, Tomassi. We’re going to see your new plant. I have a feeling there might be some shiny new things I would like to buy,” Nikolay had said, then blown his cigar smoke in his direction with the arrogance of someone who knew no one ever said no to him.

And Xander wasn’t going to be the one to test him.

But it was a problem. He was juggling a lot of powerful people and their corrupt money.

As they got closer to delivering on the vampire enhanced soldiers, everyone wanted to be first.

And they couldn’t be.

“Looks like you’re further ahead on production than you’ve been letting on,” Mikhailov continued darkly. “Let me make it easy for you. When I leave the United States, it will be with one of the new products, or your ashes.”

Tomassi had felt his face pale.

“The decision is not purely mine,” he had replied. “Nor are they ready.”

Fuck you.

How had he known about Las Vegas?

While Xander had tasked his head scientist, Dr. Phillips, with creating the new lab in Los Angeles, the other plant had already been in production.

Las Vegas was his top-secret production line. He’d even kept it from Dr. Phillips.

While the scientist had been on board with learning about vampires and seeing what was possible when you paired their DNA with humans, Xander knew his morals would restrict them from moving forward with speed. He’d sensed his reluctance and realized he needed an alternative.

Not just because of Phillips, but because of the vampires. He knew they had been investigating BioZen and staking out their sites.
